So I’ve always known the item you’re talking about to be called a “chore coat.” I googled the origins of the coat and it was created in France in the 19th century and used by laborers, rail workers, farmers, and other people who did hard, manual labor. It was made from a sturdy material, loose enough to be worn over overalls, and had big front pockets that could carry tools. It’s interesting that now it’s called a barn or field jacket and has lost that practical working class association. Ranchers may have barns, but as you said so do people who own horses. Field could be in reference to a farmer, but it also evokes nature and exploration (think “field notes”). The new names more closely associate it with leisure instead of labor. Or you could say they refer to a rustic aesthetic without making you think about the type of people who originally used this type of garment.

such a good insight! clothes being removed from their origins of labor class to become aspirational symbols of leisure/wealth

I know you didn't ask for feedback, but I just want to say I thought this was very well done and well thought out! Too many podcasters waffle on for much too long, and I think you came off very clear and articulate in the points you were making. It's so hard to talk about outfits on a audio platform but you did it well (I didn't see any of your photos until after I finished), and the analysis on barn jackets was succinct but not without substance (I agree with you... it's not a coincidence that Doen makes barn jackets!). Also, you use way fewer filler words than most, and I didn't notice any vocal fry (which can make listening to podcasts very difficult). Feels like audio content is a medium that suits you, and thanks for experimenting and bringing something different to the table! Sorry if I'm overstepping...I listen to a lot of podcasts and I clearly have a lot of thoughts I've kept to myself for too long.

Lin, this comment means so much! I am always open to feedback. In my listens of myself I was like gosh it’s a little breathy maybe I should inhale away from the mic…

It’s SUPER helpful to know the length and overall format is resonating. I’m not a big podcast person (agree most of them tend to ramble on for too long) but trying to find a balance between planned talking points vs not overly scripted. Again thank you so much for taking the time to listen :)
