would looove a post that’s a closet tour of your silk dresses. The colours and textures are so heavenly and fun to look at. (the dosa beetle dress…find of the century!)
When I first moved to Santa Barbara after a lifetime in the Midwest, it took me a while to find a new rhythm through the seasons. But I began to notice the patterns in what was blooming. Purple was the start of summer, with agapanthas and jacarandas everywhere. And now, living in the East Bay, I keep an eye out for when the hills turn from green to gold.
Great post. I live in Marin and you captured the feelings of the area perfectly! Things that are part of summer for me are June/July gloom, corn on the cob, cherry tomatoes, and watermelon.
We moved from NorCal to the PNW last fall and while the PNW supposedly gets seasons, I’m having a hard time registering it as summer without the 100 degree heat. Feels kind of like an endless spring? Flowers blooming, everything super green. The tomatoes, melons, pit fruit, and now berries at the store tell me it’s summer but my closet and my duvet don’t believe it! I’m definitely not complaining, but I’m recalibrating my seasonal markers.
I don't live in a completely seasonless city; fall and winter feel pretty distinct, but spring and summer aren't too dissimilar after a certain point. I guess it's like we have 2 seasons rather than 4. You're so right about the flavours: summer brings all the berries, peaches, and apricots. But as others have said, the blooms! Spring starts with cherry blossoms and magnolias, then we get irises, poppies, and hydrangeas in the summer.
There's a lagoon by the highway in San Diego with a small house or business visible while driving- during the summer they put out a giant striped floating jump space in the water. That floatie has marked the coming and goings of every summer of my life almost!

I lived in SB for almost a decade and your comment makes me very nostalgic!

The gloom is the vibe lol! *Clutches cardigan in a big little lies way*

It’s like poetry—the way you know it’s summer, the way you consider which food in a perfect vessel ❤️

A friend who had moved from the East Coast asked, "How the hell do you even know if it's fall here?" "When Mollie Stones puts out pumpkins," I said.
