Completely second your observation on modern costume design. From my personal experience working on many a set as a costume designer myself, the completely unrealistic expectation from production now is to get dozens to hundreds of options for fittings and return 99% of it with little to no time to shop. Meaning the majority of options will be from the nearby mall or fast fashion slop. Some vintage shops in LA will allow for mass pulls for fittings, but that’s only for big productions.

I’ve never seen “Practical Magic”, but I am a “mature woman” :) Personal styles do shift over time. Maybe a comparison of 1998 lead style and 2026 supporting characters’ style? Or both films’ witchy styles? Thank you for your takes.

Also, I want to echo your point about the lighting in the newer movie - why do so many movies these days look so...filtered and lifeless?! Just an overuse of soft light or something. I noticed this while watching The Devil Wears Prada 2, and it's such a bummer! The originals had so much more charm.
First, sending big hugs to you and Maggi. The stress of taking your beloved dog to emergency vet care, then waiting to be seen for hours is enormous. Second, this is such a difference in costume design that's sad to see. I was thinking the same thing watching TDWP2 - it was an off the rack sparkle explosion that felt so visually jarring compared to the original. I'd happily wear the outfits from the first movie today and had a hard time focusing on the sequel because the costume design kept taking me out of the movie.
There is something about how they used to dress 90s witches between practical magic, charmed and sabrina. This is the style I still try to achieve now
I was obsessed with charmed!!! Especially since it was set in San Francisco - maybe I’ll have to write a Halliwell sister style guide!
