“You have to sniff the butt,” the man nearby said.
I was standing in front of the pineapples with Danni. We were wondering aloud how to tell which one was the ripest. We heeded his advice and picked up the scaly golden fruits, flipped the butt side up, and took deep inhales with flared nostrils. One of the pineapple butts smelled especially fragrant—almost syrupy.
Last week I made mango pops after listening to the song Mango Pops by Elle Musa (embedded above). This week we are making pineapple watermelon pops with lime juice and tajín. These grocery store trips have been the source of all my creative inspiration lately. My local store, Monterey Market, is a magical place full of all the seasonal produce you need to prepare nourishing meals. I’m not joking when I say a good 50% of my everyday life revolves around what’s in this store.
Everything glorious about California comes alive in June. It’s like the California dream is actually real. Perfect swimming pool weather. The sun doesn’t set until 9pm. For a brief moment, you forget about the cost-of-living stress and your unpaid street sweeping tickets because you’re high off eating a $25 lobster roll with salted chive butter and a tupperware of chilled watermelon cubes at the park.
Honey fig kefir! Donut peaches! Giant heirloom tomatoes that look like the Loewe tomato on steroids! Basking in the communal joy of summer produce influences the way I dress—which has been more lush, colorful, vivid, carefree. Tucking sheer scarves into a bra, pushing the waistband of a breezy skirt lower than normal.

I want to wear outfits that feel like a jiggly mango, soft as pudding. I want bright green silks that refresh my eyes like a basket of aromatic zingy limes. I want to swim in stripes that look like retro coney island licorice candies and red polka dots that look like bursted tomatoes.
