From my midwestern childhood - cut grass that dried out in the sun to point it smelled more like hay plus wet mulch and milkweed.
From my nyc summers - when i lived there le labo Santal 33 had a chokehold on all of SoHo that in combination with the occasional whiff of hot trash immediately places me there.
From my sf summers - honestly one of my favorite things about sf is the way it smells. The fog carries the Pacific Ocean along with minty sweet eucalyptus year round. In the summer, you get that plus turn a random corner and you run into a fugue of small white flower trees sweeter than honeysuckle.
You still looked so cute on your vacation tho! But I totally get not dressing like yourself on vacation, especially in a climate completely different from your home city.
As for summer scents it’s changed! When I still lived in Melbourne it was a hot salty ocean breeze, now that I live in Vancouver sometimes it’s grass after a rain (often!) or a hint of sweet overripe fruit, as the summer is so intense but short that the berry bushes around my neighbourhood fruit and instantly spoil on the tree.
I grew up in mendocino and summer smells always consisted of seaweed, salt, redwood sap, cannabis, petrichor — now this will be my second summer living in berkeley and the increasingly warmer days are filled with more flower smells than I’ve ever experienced before, it feels magical to smell roses and jasmine so strongly whenever I open my window
Chlorine, sunscreen, and lycra are the summer smells of my childhood. Growing up in Florida, there weren't many accessible activities for kids unless you had parents who weren't full-time employees and could drive you to and from extracurricular camps. My brother and I found ourselves at the amenity pool more days than not, where we'd be from sun up to sun down. I also ended up working part-time at said amenity pool in high school.
i also spent summers in middle school at the community pool programs which doubled as babysitting haha. loved the smell of chlorine and costco hot dogs.
Recently went on a longer trip and was so excited to experiment with looks but ended up cycling through the same few shirts and dresses because we were walking everywhere and it was too hot to do anything more, so this is very relatable🥲
I’d say the smell of mangoes reminds me most of summer! My family would stubbornly wait for the local Indian stores to start stocking mangoes imported from the motherland, and once they showed up, my father would bring them back home by the case. Our kitchen would smell faintly of mangoes the entire summer, and sometimes, you’d get hit with a cloud of its heady fragrance when opening a bag of rice, where you could always find a few mangoes nestled inside, ripening to perfection.
I live in San Francisco, and summer is one of the coolest times of the year. I’m reminded of salty, windy, gusty grey days. Because of that, Big Sur after Rain by DS Durga that’s just enough woodsy and musky
Honeysuckle is the smell that most reminds me of summers growing up in Tennessee. And of course sunscreen, which hardly anyone wears in El Salvador. My little cousin once told me “you smell American” hahaha
I grew up in Los Angeles and would go to Ojai in the summer for the pixie tangerines and their lavender festival - the smell of citrus and lavender is such a yummy summery combo!
You look so cute w/ the lil salomons! Curating a tiny subsection of your wardrobe that prioritizes comfort for vacation and all goes together is the way to go!
i loved the escada skirt with the salomons! we should made cute floaty skirts with hiking shoes a Thing.
my summer scents are chlorine and peaches. i spent a lot of summertime as a kid at my grandparents’ produce farm in the california central valley, and the scent of the peaches they grew on their property wafted through the house all the time. my cousins and i also spent a lot of time in the pool on the farm, hence the chlorine. honorable mention to debaser by ds and durga: green and tart fig scent with a little bit of coconut :)
Good advice: 🙏🏻dress for comfort on vacay..and loved no denying that we are tourists! Acceptance of ourselves.. loved it.. enjoyed your details. An aside: Did you happen to go to FIT a few years ago?
..and my fave summer scent is a bit vintage (like me) lol… White Linen by Estée Lauder..
Wow do I also struggle to feel the thrill of dressing while on vacation! As someone who shape-shifts outfits throughout the day, I love the feeling of slowly moving through getting dressed, undressed, redressed throughout the day. On my favorite days I'm not done until the evening (Add, subtract, change the shoes, smudge on a second lip color midday, etc etc etc.) That doesn't happen on vacation, particularly when you leave your room in the morning and don't come back until the day is done.
This summer I find myself craving smoky, spicy scents. I live in the American south and there is something about the hot hazy days that has me wanting to roll on something smoky and heady in the evenings. Maybe the scent equivalent of Devon Aoki's eyeliner? This girl is not clean and crisp this summer!
fascinating read !! I recently bought these black barrel pants from uniqlo via Depop, and I totally get the Japanese big pant silhouette — so breezy and fun and slightly more elevated than my baggy jeans.

i didn't go to FIT (but i wish, haha!) and yes, no shame in the tourist stereotypes as long as we're respectful in the places we visit!
