how my style has changed this year
rediscovering miniskirts, holy grail jeans, getting miumiu-pilled
my 2022 style evolution
printed miniskirts: somehow the biggest growing category in my closet has been miniskirts. which has less to do with how much i liked miniskirts, and more about how my day to day lifestyle has changed - from commuting in the city to remote work. it was just never practical for me to wear miniskirts when i was dressing for an office setting, walking in cold mornings, needing to be nimble on public transit (if you’re a BART rider then you know the blood sport that is the macarthur transfer during rush hour). but i’ve really rediscovered my love of minis and how playful they feel with socks and chunky shoes. structured minis > drapey delicate minis. because they feel more gamine and boyish. i’m partial to miniskirts with an interesting pattern or print. i also feel like if my haircut were an article of clothing, it would be a miniskirt…short and a subtle flare at the bottom. that just makes sense to me.
holy grail jeans: it seems every year i get deeply attached to one pair of jeans (or pants - i’m a recovered #kammpants addict). last year it was the AGOLDE Rileys and this year it’s the B Sides Plein jean (more of a straight leg fit for me). i might consider getting the patchwork ones. i find denim shopping exhausting because there simultaneously so many options and no options?? Between wash, cut, inseam, fabrication, price, etc….there are just so many factors and i hate trying on jeans. they are the most time consuming item to shop for imo. i got my B Sides jeans on therealreal - there’s a decent amount that get uploaded to the site.
dabbing in gorp-lite: if you told me last year i would actually be into gorp, i would not believe you. i don’t like doing most outdoorsy things. but that is the fun of personal growth….as much as i chase distinct personal style, style is never fixed because you are never fixed. i think in all the messaging against fast fashion/participating in trends, we often forget that novelty can be very good for you. even necessary! i like mixing gorpy pieces (thrifted north face zip off pants, platform teva style sandals, fleece vests) with colorful accessories and pieces that read “sophisticated” like knee high boots or a leather kerchief. it’s good irony.
