come for the chaos, stay for the crop tops
how to dress like your favorite chaotic parisian from Passages
🕊️ Ceasefire Now in Gaza 🕊️
If you’re a film buff, check out my post today on fashion in Passages, which is showing on MUBI.
The characters feel realistic, and that’s in part because their clothes are believable. From the art heaux (endearing) crop tops to the basic bitch (also endearing) crossbody bags, I’ve seen these character archetypes out in the wild. A Tomas shops at Dover Street Market to get a pair of $1200 holographic pants for his Arts District warehouse party later that night. An Agathe texts her friends “coffee run & thrift this weekend?” while she gets on the bus with a messy topknot cause she’s late for work. A Martin always carries a copy of An Infinite Jest in his unbranded leather messenger bag (wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a New Yorker tote). They make for fun characters to analyze from a fashion standpoint.
Let’s start with Agathe, because I think her wardrobe is the most realistic and relatable for most readers. She obviously loves red. Something I appreciate about her style is that even though it leans basic/normcore-ish, she’s not a Djerf Avenue/corporatecore girl. You get a really sharp sense of her emotional world through her clothing choices.
The Rouje Lucien sweater looks exactly like her turtleneck in that *sad scene*
We first meet her in the club where she wears a magenta popcorn top—this Staud top has the same energy
Her red leather jacket is one of her most memorable pieces, it functions as a sort of emotional armor when she’s still getting to know Tomas. I’ve written about Maje before as their leather is actually soft and moves with your body; TRR has a good selection…
Stating the obvious here—Tomas’s clothes are expensive. That’s part of his character, flashy and doesn’t care how he comes across to people. I have to say though, I LOVED his collection of see through knits.
One good alternative to full-price Acne is searching for open knit secondhand Lauren Manoogian
This Ulla Johnson mesh long sleeve is like a purple version of his club outfit
For his iconic green sweater, I found this chewed-up Andersson Bell knit
It’s hard to find a non fast-fashion version of his dragon print mesh crop top…here’s one on Poshmark
It’s easy to dress like Martin. He would go to Uniqlo for basics but be a bit more picky with his sweaters and outerwear.
I can imagine him wearing this 3sixteen cardigan while struggling as an introvert at the bar
For his navy fisherman sweater look, I recommend Aran Woolen Mills
Let me know what you thought of the film! And if you have other recs on MUBI :)
